Like much of Crown’s practice, her Brain Coral paintings began with looking closely. Gifted a piece of Brain Coral, the artist scanned a section of these cerebral-looking organisms at high resolution so she could investigate more closely the reduced graphic imagery of the patterns. 3D rendering the tube form of the coral patterning led to creating stamps from the extruded structure, which she then applied to paint and canvas.
By looking closely, zooming in, and extracting these patterns, the artist discovered new worlds within these structures. Crown’s practice is constantly in search of expanding our knowledge to do a deeper dive and seek out the essentiality of the forms that surround us. We all stand on sacred ground, it just requires awareness. Afternoon shadows, a pattern in the sidewalk, a paper’s edge all are open for insight. That is where we want to live, in the openness of possibility.
